Arts & Letters is an interdisciplinary major for students seeking to understand and evaluate the multidimensional features of society and the human experience. Courses investigate the intersection of ideas related to health, science, politics, globalization, economics, religion, culture, aesthetics, and history.

The Arts & Letters major has graduate school, professional, and general tracks. Each track blends classroom learning with hands-on experience.

The graduate school track stresses undergraduate research. Majors in this track have opportunities to present at conferences, such as the North American Undergraduate Conference in Religion and Philosophy, and to publish in undergraduate journals, such as Palimpsest. With proper guidance, majors might pursue graduate degrees in any humanities field or more specialized degrees in law, medicine, or business.

Majors in the professional track complete a minor in Business Administration. This track also requires an internship. Graduates have a wide range of career options, such as business, city planning, education, recreation, government, history research, human resources, nonprofit organizations, journalism, media, museum/public history, publishing, public relations, visual arts, and retail.

Majors in the general track have the flexibility to take courses in what interests them. They complete either an undergraduate research project or an internship.

For all tracks within the major, study abroad is highly encouraged. In addition to providing majors with a first-hand look at the realities of globalization, study abroad improves one’s marketability. More employers are looking for students with study abroad experience, since study abroad demonstrates one’s willingness to take calculated risks, one’s ability to work with others in new settings, and one’s competency in a second language.
