School of Nurse Certification

This is a 14 credit post-baccalaureate program. All courses are on the graduate level.

Admissions Requirements. Applicant must be a licensed registered nurse in Pennsylvania and must have a baccalaureate degree in nursing. Students must have two English and two math undergraduate courses. This program is state-accredited and approved by the Pennsylvania Department of Education. After successful completion the candidate is recommended for certification by the University’s Department of Education to the Pennsylvania Department of Education to be a certified school nurse.

Application Procedures. Candidates apply for admission through the Department of Nursing. Persons enrolled in the program must have current CPR certificate, physical examination, Act 34 and 151 clearances, and a copy of current Pennsylvania RN licensure on file. The student eligible for the program must have a minimum GPA of 3.0 at the undergraduate level.

Grading Policies. The student must maintain a 3.0 GPA in the program. If a student falls below a 3.0 GPA  in the School Nurse Certificate Program, the student will go on a provisional status.

Advisement. Academic advisement will be provided by a Nursing Department faculty member.

Prerequisites. This includes current nursing practice. The nurse must have worked a minimum of 1,000 hours in the last five (5) years or must take a nurse refresher course before taking NURS 502 . The student must evidence having taken a community nursing course, research critique skills, and health assessment skills.

NURS 501  and NURS 502  (Theory) are offered in an accelerated format every other week. Part of N502 theory is done by distance learning. All are graduate level courses. The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania requires a minimum of 100 hours of clinical practice with a certified school nurse.
