Chair: Dr. Rachel Wagner

Program Description:

The Bachelor of Arts degree in Mathematics is a path to mathematics that embraces the subject as an art form and emphasizes the inherent beauty of its arguments and artifacts. The program provides a firm foundation in general principles, offers a broad range of mathematics subject areas, and reveals the ways mathematics can be applied to other areas of study. Bachelor of Arts candidates will complete a self-study project exhibiting an intersection of mathematics and the arts. That intersection can include literature, history, visual arts, and music.

The program leading to a Bachelor of Arts has the same mathematics courses as the Mathematics, B.S. ; but with no additional science courses required, this pathway is easier to pair with another major. Mathematics is a great accompaniment to other areas of study, from business to criminal justice to programs in health care.

Student Learning Outcomes:

Upon successful completion of this program, students should be able to:

  • Demonstrate knowledge of diverse areas in Mathematics such as algebra, analysis, and Applied Mathematics;
  • Demonstrate the ability to apply Mathematics and logical reasoning to problem solving including problems in other fields;
  • Read and communicate Mathematics with understanding and clarity.

Estimated Completion Time:

Typically 4 years of full-time study

Total Credits Required:

128 credits minimum

Capstone Requirement:

Students in the Mathematics, B.A. program are required to pass the ETS Mathematics major field exam and complete a senior research project. The requirements can be met by successfully completing MATH 492 Mathematics Seminar  (1 credit).
