Program Description:

The Biochemistry major is an interdisciplinary program offered jointly by the Chemistry Department and the Biology Department. The Biochemistry, B.A. degree gives a broad background in the fundamental principles of chemistry and biology. Biochemists study the chemical processes that occur in living cells as well as the structure and function of proteins, lipids, carbohydrates, and nucleic acids. Students are required to broaden their education with a Pre-Law studies specialization, minor, or double major in a discipline outside the Biology or Chemistry Departments.

Department Learning Objectives

1. Ability to use and read chemical formulas, nomenclature, and chemical reactions and to do calculations involving stoichiometry, mixtures, solutions, solubility, and chemical equilibrium
2. Ability to describe and recognize bonding, structure, and stereochemistry and to predict organic reactions, mechanisms, and synthesis
3. Ability to describe how biological molecules are metabolized, regulation of metabolic pathways, and regulation of cell signaling systems
4. Ability to demonstrate knowledge of molecular genetics and how this leads to the expression and inheritance of traits
5. Ability to apply the laws of thermodynamics to evaluate conditions of chemical equilibrium and direction and rates of chemical reactions
6. Ability to read primary sources in biochemistry (peer reviewed literature) and verbally communicate chemical concepts effectively
