This course examines various perspectives on justice, fairness, equality, discretion of professional duties, and civic responsibilities from the Greek classical period through the modern use of applied ethics today. Every aspect of the criminal justice system involves the application of the law, ethical issues, and decisions that affect the lives of individuals in society. Professionals in the criminal justice system have authority to enforce the laws, regulate the courts, and to potentially deprive suspects and offenders of their liberty. Such authority and discretion often raise serious moral and ethical issues; therefore, students must understand the weight of their professional responsibilities in the criminal justice field.
