AVMT 206 - Airframe Group VI: Aircraft Instrument Systems / Environmental Systems (2 credits) Aircraft Instrument Systems
Lecture:
Pressure indicating instruments. Temperature indicating instruments. Pitot-static system. Fuel quantity indicating systems. Instrument range markings. 14 CFR parts 43 and 91 requirements for static system leak checks. Instrument limitations, conditions, and characteristics. Aircraft bonding and protection. Instrument or instrument panel removal and installation. Use of pressurized air and water during maintenance or cleaning of aircraft instrument systems. Performing a pitot/static system test. Magnetic compass inspection and operation. Magnetic compass swinging procedures. Gyroscopic instruments. Direction indicating instruments. Instrument vacuum and pneumatic systems. Handling of mechanical gyros or instrument containing mechanical gyros. Annunciator indicating systems and the meaning of warning, caution, and advisory lights. Position indication sensors and instruments. Electronic displays. Electrostatic sensitive devices. Built-in test equipment. Electronic flight information system. Electronic indication and crew alerting system. Heads up guidance. Angle of attack and stall warning systems. Takeoff and landing gear configuration warning systems. Actions in response to a reported intermittent warning or caution annunciator light illumination. Performing maintenance on equipment identified as electrostatic sensitive.
Lab:
Perform a static system leak test. Determine barometric pressure using an altimeter. Select proper altimeter for installation on a given aircraft. Inspect an aircraft’s alternate air (static) source. Locate the procedures for troubleshooting a vacuum operated instrument system. Inspect a vacuum system filter for serviceability. Adjust gyro/instrument air pressure/vacuum. Remove and install an instrument. Install range marks on an instrument glass. Check for proper range markings on an instrument. Inspect a magnetic compass. Identify exhaust gas temperature system components. Inspect outside air temperature gauge for condition and operation. Locate and explain the adjustment procedures for a stall warning system.

Lecture:
Pressurization systems. Cabin pressurization and system components operation and inspection procedures. Types of oxygen systems and oxygen system components operation. Oxygen system maintenance and inspection procedures. Oxygen system maintenance. Handling or performing maintenance on, chemical oxygen generating systems. Storage, handling, and use of compressed gas cylinder and high pressure systems. Bleed air heating. Aircraft instrument cooling. Exhaust heat exchanger and system components function, operation, and inspection procedures. Combustion heater and system components function, operation, and inspection procedures. Vapor-cycle system and system components operation, servicing, and inspection procedures. Air-cycle system and system components operation and inspection procedures. Recovery of vapor-cycle refrigerant. Manufacturer’s recommended servicing procedures, including refrigerant types. Maintenance of combustion heaters.
Lab:
Inspect an oxygen system. Purge an oxygen system prior to servicing. Service an oxygen system. Clean and inspect a pilot emergency oxygen mask and supply hoses. Inspect an oxygen system pressure regulator. Inspect an oxygen system cylinder for serviceability. Inspect a chemical oxygen generator for serviceability and safe handling. Locate the procedures to troubleshoot a combustion heater. Inspect a combustion heater fuel system for leaks. Inspect a cabin heater system equipped with an exhaust heat exchanger for cracks. Locate the procedures for servicing a refrigerant (vapor-cycle) system. Locate the troubleshooting procedures for an air cycle system. Troubleshoot an air-cycle air conditioning system. Clean and inspect an outflow valve for a pressurization system. Locate troubleshooting procedures for a pressurization system.
