AVMT 207 - Airframe Group VII: Metallic Structures (3 credits) Metallic Structures
Lecture:
Inspection/testing of metal structures. Types of sheet metal defects. Heat treatment processes for aluminum. Types of structures and their characteristics. Selection of sheet metal repair materials. Selection of rivets, hardware, and fasteners for a sheet metal repair. Layout, forming, and drilling of sheet metal components. Rivet layout. Rivet removal and installation methods. Maintenance safety practices/precautions for sheet metal repairs or fabrications. Selection of repair materials. Utilizing maintenance safety practices/precautions for sheet metal structures. Use of PPE when working with sheet metal structures. Flame welding gasses. Storage/handling of welding gasses. Flame welding practices and techniques. Inert gas welding practices and techniques. Purpose and types of shielding gasses. Types of steel tubing welding repairs. Procedure for weld repairs. Handling, storage, and use of compressed gas bottles. Use of electric welding equipment.
Lab:
Install and remove solid rivets. Install and remove a blind rivet. Select and install special purpose fasteners. Remove a repair that was installed with rivets. Countersink rivet holes in sheet metal. Metallic Structures. Determine applicability of sheet metal for a repair in a specific application Design a repair using a manufacturer’s structural repair manual. Make a drawing of a repair, including the number of rivets and size of sheet metal required. Determine a rivet pattern for a specific repair. Determine extent of damage and decide it metallic structure is repairable. Prepare and install a patch to repair an aircraft or component. Trim and form a piece of sheet metal to fit a prepared area. Fabricate an aluminum part in accordance with a drawing. Perform a repair on a damaged aluminum sheet.
