THEO 210 - Christianity and Politics

(3 credits)
This course examines the nature and purpose of human government as expressed in Catholic theology and history. We will survey the major political teachings and practices of the Church from the biblical era to today. Sources studied include Scripture, ecumenical Councils, papal writings, and the works of figures such as Augustine of Hippo, Thomas Aquinas, Louis IX, and John Paul II. Topics to be examined include the nature of government and law, the various types of government, human dignity and rights, the common good, and the relationship between religion and politics. As needed. Prerequisite: THEO 105
