Program Description:
Environmental engineering involves the application of the principles of science and mathematics to the protection of human health, preservation of ecosystem function, and stewardship of natural resources. The environmental engineering program at SFU prepares students in the fundamental theory of environmental engineering as well as in the practical applications. The curriculum includes substantial hands-on experiences in both field work and laboratory experimentation. Student-led design projects are incorporated throughout the four years of study with a culminating capstone design experience in the senior year.
Minors offered at SFU with an environmental engineering focus include Ecological Engineering Minor , Renewable Energy Minor , and Civil Engineering Minor . Environmental Engineering majors are encouraged, but not required, to get a minor.
Student Learning Outcomes:
Each student will have demonstrated the proficiency in the following outcomes upon graduation with a Bachelor of Science in Environmental Engineering:
1. an ability to identify, formulate, and solve complex engineering problems by applying principles of engineering, science, and mathematics
2. an ability to apply engineering design to produce solutions that meet specified needs with consideration of public health, safety, and welfare, as well as global, cultural, social, environmental, and economic factors
3. an ability to communicate effectively with a range of audiences
4. an ability to recognize ethical and professional responsibilities in engineering situations and make informed judgments, which must consider the impact of engineering solutions in global, economic, environmental, and societal contexts
5. an ability to function effectively on a team whose members together provide leadership, create a collaborative and inclusive environment, establish goals, plan tasks, and meet objectives
6. an ability to develop and conduct appropriate experimentation, analyze and interpret data, and use engineering judgment to draw conclusions
7. an ability to acquire and apply new knowledge as needed, using appropriate learning strategies.
Accreditation Statement:
The Environmental Engineering program at Saint Francis University is accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET, http://www.abet.org.
Professional Licensure and/or Certification:
By virtue of the environmental engineering program’s ABET accreditation, graduates of the environmental engineering program are able to sit for the Fundamentals of Engineering exam which is the first step in pursuing licensure as a Professional Engineer.
Estimated Completion Time:
Typically 4 years of full-time study
Capstone Requirement:
Students in the Bachelor of Science in Environmental Engineering program are required to complete a capstone design experience by completing all of the following courses:
Total Credits Required:
130 minimum
