Program Description:
The Fine Arts Minor is open to all students, regardless of their major. The program kicks off with an introductory course where you’ll explore how different art forms like music, theater, and visual arts play a role in today’s society through engaging discussions and hands-on learning. You’ll then choose to specialize in one of these areas by selecting elective courses that match your interests. The program wraps up with a unique interdisciplinary experience, giving you the chance to understand and appreciate art from various viewpoints-whether as a performer, audience member, critic, or from historical and social perspectives.
Student Learning Outcomes:
Students will:
-
Cultivate Artistic Literacy and Appreciation: Students will develop a foundational understanding of the various forms of art, including music, theatre, and visual arts, enabling them to appreciate and critically evaluate artistic expressions and their impacts in contemporary society.
-
Develop Practical Artistic Skills: Through elective courses in their chosen focus area, students will acquire practical skills relevant to visual arts, music, or theatre. This includes drawing, painting, photography, musical performance, composition, acting, and stage production.
-
Enhance Interdisciplinary Understanding: Students will engage in interdisciplinary studies, integrating concepts and methodologies from different art forms to enhance their understanding of how arts intersect with cultural, social, and historical contexts.
-
Promote Critical Thinking and Analytical Skills: The program will equip students with the ability to analyze art forms critically from multiple perspectives including performer, spectator, and consumer, fostering a deeper intellectual engagement with the arts.
-
Encourage Creative Expression and Innovation: Students will be encouraged to participate in creative projects and performances, fostering personal expression and innovation across various artistic mediums.
-
Professional Preparation and Career Insight: Through coursework and experiential learning opportunities such as internships at museums and field experiences in theatre, students will gain practical insights and professional preparation for careers in the arts or related fields.
-
Foster a Global Perspective on Art: The program will explore global artistic traditions and contemporary practices, preparing students to understand and appreciate diversity in artistic expression worldwide.
These outcomes aim to provide students not only with technical skills and knowledge in specific art forms but also with a broad understanding of the role of arts in society and personal development.
