Mathematics (Accelerated MBA) B.S.

Program Description:

The program in mathematics embodies both views of mathematics: one, as the study of abstract structures and hence independent of the physical world; the other, as the cornerstone of all scientific inquiry. The program leads to a Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics and is designed to provide a firm foundation in general principles, offer a broad range of mathematics subject areas, and reveal the ways mathematics can be applied to other areas of study. 

Career opportunities for Mathematics majors are many. The growth of automation and space science, the widespread use of computers, the increasing dependence of the actuarial, biological, computer, managerial, and social sciences on mathematics, and the modern emphasis on such topics as probability, statistics, combinatorics, and functional analysis in engineering and the physical sciences have created a demand for mathematicians. Also, the discipline and training necessary to obtain a degree in mathematics is recognized as an excellent foundation for careers that normally would not be considered mathematical like law and medicine.

The Mathematics (Accelerated MBA), B.S., program offers an opportunity for students to pursue both mathematics and an MBA in a relatively short time frame. This program provides students the opportunity to accelerate the completion of the MBA program by allowing you to earn up to nine credits towards the undergraduate degree that will also fulfill requirements in the MBA program. Upon successful completion of all undergraduate degree requirements for the B.S. Mathematics, and if all progression standards are met, students will be automatically accepted into the SFU MBA program and will not be required to complete the GMAT exam. Students in this program develop depth in mathematics and a business acumen.

Student Learning Outcomes:

Upon successful completion of this program, students should be able to:

  • Demonstrate knowledge of diverse areas in Mathematics such as algebra, analysis, and Applied Mathematics;
  • Demonstrate the ability to apply Mathematics and logical reasoning to problem solving including problems in other fields;
  • Read and communicate Mathematics with understanding and clarity;
  • Be prepared to engage successfully in an MBA program.

Admission Deadline:

The program has rolling admission.

Estimated Completion Time:

4 Years, Full Time, for the B.S.

Capstone Requirement:

Students in the Mathematics (Accelerated MBA), B.S., are required to pass the ETS Mathematics major field exam and complete a senior research project. The requirements can be met by successfully completing MATH 492 Mathematics seminar (1 credit).

MBA Coursework: (9 credits)


Students in this accelerated program may take up to 9 credits of graduate MBA courses that can be utilized to fulfill both free electives in the undergraduate program and requirement in the MBA program.

Progression and/or Retention Criteria:

All students in the Mathematics (Accelerated MBA) B.S., program must meet the following academic requirements to have guaranteed admission to the MBA program upon completion of the undergraduate degree requirements. Failure to meet the progression standards will result in dismissal from the major but not the university. This includes all accelerated majors leading to the MBA program approved by the University.

1. At any time after earning 30 credits but before earning 60 credits, the student must have achieved a minimum overall cumulative QPA of 2.750. Failure to achieve this QPA will result in Department Academic Warning.

2. At any time after earning 60 credits but before earning 90 credits, the student must have achieved a minimum overall cumulative QPA of 3.000. Failure to achieve this QPA will result in dismissal from the major.

3. At any time after earning 90 credits and upon graduation from the undergraduate program, the student must have achieved a minimum overall cumulative QPA of 3.200. Failure to achieve this QPA will result in dismissal from the major.

Students dismissed from the Mathematics (Accelerated MBA) B.S., major should contact their academic advisor to select another major. Dismissed students can still apply for admission to the MBA program upon completion of their undergraduate degree; however, there is no acceleration option and acceptance is not guaranteed.
