EDUC 502 - Language and Reading Development (3 credits) This graduate course investigates the issues at the core of reading/writing development through a study of language acquisition theory and the various influences on language development affecting the young child today, including cultural, ethnic, and sociological factors. In addition, the student will study how reading, writing, oral language, and listening skills interact in the emergent stage of literacy development, including interest and motivation to read. Students will also develop skills in monitoring the progress of emergent readers in foundation skills.
