EDUC 518 - Methods of English Language Arts (3 credits) This course will incorporate the suggested guidelines of the U.S. Department of Education. A foundation of reading and writing theory will be developed and investigated in relation to the components of reading enumerated in the National Reading Panel’s report, including the following: phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, and vocabulary and text comprehension. Additionally, critical literacy will be investigated. Emphasis will be on the “learning-to-read” stages of development, as well as writing as communication and the writing process. Students will study basic developmental reading skills, including language acquisition, readiness skills, vocabulary development, word recognition skills and comprehension. They will examine various reading approaches, their effectiveness and associated methods of instruction. Close attention to recognition of student difficulties and using information acquired through formal and informal means to individualize instruction to students’ needs, including ELL students and students with special needs Pre K -4th grade will be an area of focus. Students will investigate, practice, and interpret assessment measures within each area of concern through sound and appropriate selection and application of formal and informal means of assessment. Students will complete 15 hours of field experience in an area school or educational setting.
Required clearances will be needed to participate in field experiences.
