Explores the development of Mediterranean societies from the rise of Islam to the conquest of Constantinople, focusing particularly on the history of cultural interaction among the diverse peoples of the Mediterranean basin. The course follows a roughly chronological organization, emphasizing the economic connections, social relationships and cultural understandings of the people of the Mediterranean.
